What is Reflexology?

Becoming more and more relevant for today's increasingly stressful lifestyle the complementary therapy of reflexology is worth investigating. It is based on skills known to have been practised for several thousand years by the Chinese and the ancient Egyptians, and involves massage to special reflex areas in the feet and hands although the feet are commonly used in modern practice.

How does it work?

In the feet and hands there are reflex areas laid out in such a manner to form a "map" of every organ and body system. By massaging these areas it is believed possible to stimulate the whole body to healing and relaxation, but we do not really know how it works.

What happens during treatment?

Your first appointment involves a survey of your medical history, carried out in complete privacy, where all personal details remain completely confidential. You will then be seated in a reclining chair or couch depending on which is the most comfortable position for you. The therapist will examine your feet, beginning the precise massage movements to all areas using the side of the thumbs and fingers to apply a firm pressure.

Will it feel painful, or tickle?

No, reflexology is a particularly pleasant form of treatment. Areas on the feet corresponding to parts of the body that are out of balance may feel tender but sensitivity varies from person to person and the therapist will understand the correct pressure to apply, responding to the client. The treatment should not be uncomfortable even to the most sensitive of feet. Indeed, even people who might say "I could not bear anyone to touch my feet" will usually feel wonderfully relaxed and energised after treatment.

How long does a treatment take?

The full treatment will last for approximately three quarters of an hour after the initial consultation. The number of treatments required will vary depending on the condition being treated and the therapist will fully discuss any proposed course with you.

Are there any after-effects?

Normally none, but it is sometimes possible that eliminating systems of the body become more active. This should be seen as a positive sign that the body is ridding itself of unwanted toxins.

General Information

Reflexology does not claim to be a "cure all" but many different disorders have been successfully treated using this non-intrusive method. Migraines, sinus problems, hormonal imbalances, digestive problems, circulatory problems, back problems, tension and stress have all responded positively in people who have experience this most pleasant complementary therapy.
